Predicting rogue waves in random oceanic sea states

چکیده
Using the inverse spectral theory of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation we correlate the development of rogue waves in oceanic sea states characterized by the JONSWAP spectrum with the proximity to homoclinic solutions of the NLS equation. We find in numerical simulations of the NLS equation that rogue waves develop for JONSWAP initial data that is “near” NLS homoclinic data, while rogue waves do not occur for JONSWAP data that is “far” from NLS homoclinic data. We show the nonlinear spectral decomposition provides a simple criterium for predicting the occurrence and strength of rogue waves (PACS: 92.10.Hm, 47.20.Ky, 47.35+i).

Statistical Investigation of the Surface Profile of Rogue Waves in 2d Non-breaking Seas
Rogue waves or freak waves are very large amplitude waves compare to the ambient waves in a given sea state. There are very few recording of such waves and therefore, despite years of research, very little is known about their properties. Here we invoke a statistical approach to find out about the typical shape of these giant waves. We consider different sea states and unidirectional vs crossin...
متن کاملPredictability horizon of oceanic rogue waves
Prediction is a central goal and a yet-unresolved challenge in the investigation of oceanic rogue waves. Here we define a horizon of predictability for oceanic rogue waves and derive, via extensive computational experiments, a statistically converged predictability time scale for these structures. We show that this time scale is a function of the sea state (i.e., severity of the ambient ocean w...
متن کاملSensitivity of Oceanic Rogue Waves Predictions to Measurements Uncertainties
Here we pose and answer the question of predictability of oceanic rogue waves: “How soon can we predict a rogue wave?”. We answer this question by considering, in its most general form, the governing Laplace’s equation with fully nonlinear boundary conditions. We look into a large number of rogue wave events, and discovered a statistically converged predictability time-scales which is a functio...

We propose a novel Variational Wave Acquisition Stereo System (VWASS) that exploits new stereo reconstruction techniques for accurate estimates of the space-time dynamics of oceanic sea states. The rich information content of the acquired three-dimensional video data is exploited for predictions of directional spectra and large waves over an area by means of the Euler Characteristics of random ...
متن کامل2 00 1 Freak Waves in Random Oceanic Sea States
Freak waves are very large, rare events in a random ocean wave train. Here we study the numerical generation of freak waves in a random sea state characterized by the JONSWAP power spectrum. We assume, to cubic order in nonlinearity, that the wave dynamics are governed by the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation. We identify two parameters in the power spectrum that control the nonlinear dynam...
